General Atomics AeroTec Systems (GA-ATS) has unveiled the Do228 NXT, a modernized version of the Dornier 228 turboprop, during a rollout ceremony held at its Oberpfaffenhofen facility ahead of the ILA Berlin Air Show.

The aircraft is intended to succeed the long-running Do228, a twin-engine utility turboprop that has been used worldwide for passenger transport, cargo operations, maritime surveillance, medical evacuation and government missions.

According to GA-ATS, the Do228 NXT combines the existing airframe with updated avionics, a redesigned cockpit and cabin, and new mission systems. The company also cited improvements to the aircraft's supply chain and support structure.

The rollout marked the first public appearance of the aircraft and comes five years after General Atomics acquired the German manufacturer in 2021.

The Do228 was originally developed by Dornier in the 1980s and became known for its short takeoff and landing performance, making it suitable for operations from remote and unprepared airfields.

GA-ATS is intending to offer the Do228 NXT as a multi-role platform for civil, military and government operators. Potential applications include cargo transport, border patrol, maritime surveillance, search and rescue, disaster response and intelligence missions.

The aircraft was presented in a special livery during a ceremony attended by government officials, industry representatives, customers, suppliers and members of the Dornier family.

General Atomics said the program is intended to continue aircraft manufacturing activities at Oberpfaffenhofen, one of Germany's historic aerospace centers.

While the company has not disclosed performance specifications or a timeline for certification and deliveries, the unveiling signals General Atomics' intention to re-establish the Do228 as a competitor in the utility turboprop market, where aircraft such as the Viking Twin Otter, LET L-410 and Cessna SkyCourier currently operate.

The Do228 NXT is expected to be marketed primarily to operators requiring a versatile aircraft capable of transporting passengers, cargo or specialized mission equipment from locations with limited infrastructure.
