Lufthansa has announced that its new onboard internet service based on SpaceX's Starlink satellite network will enter commercial service on August 19 aboard an Airbus A320neo. The airline did not disclose which route will inaugurate the system.

Starlink has rapidly become one of the main providers of in-flight connectivity for commercial aviation, replacing older satellite and air-to-ground technologies. Airlines including United Airlines, Air France, AirBaltic, Qatar Airways, Hawaiian Airlines, WestJet and airBaltic have selected the system, while several other operators are preparing to introduce it.

Lufthansa Group plans to install the equipment on about 850 aircraft operated by Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, ITA Airways, Edelweiss, Discover Airlines, Air Dolomiti, Lufthansa City Airlines and Eurowings. The rollout is expected to continue through 2029.

The service will be available free of charge for Miles & More members and Travel ID users across all cabins. Lufthansa said the bandwidth will support activities such as video streaming, cloud-based applications and general internet browsing.

The group also published usage rules for the service. Voice and video calls will not be permitted, passengers must use headphones for audio and video content, and live streaming from onboard will be prohibited.

Mastercard will sponsor the onboard portal, which will replace Lufthansa's existing FlyNet platform.
