Northrop Grumman and Boeing have demonstrated autonomous cooperation between the MQ-4C Triton unmanned aircraft and the P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft during a joint technology demonstration.
According to the companies, the test marked the first time the two platforms automatically exchanged mission information through a common open-architecture interface without requiring direct operator intervention.

During the demonstration, the P-8A requested intelligence from the MQ-4C, which used onboard artificial intelligence algorithms to collect, process and transmit the requested information back to the aircraft.
The exercise focused on maritime intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and targeting (ISR&T) as well as anti-surface warfare scenarios.

The companies said the demonstration relied on the Universal Command and Control Interface (UCI), a machine-to-machine communication standard based on the U.S. military's Open Mission Systems architecture. The approach is intended to allow different crewed and uncrewed platforms to share information and coordinate missions more efficiently.
Northrop Grumman said the same interface could also enable the MQ-4C to cooperate with other U.S. and allied systems equipped with compatible mission software, reducing operator workload while accelerating the exchange of tactical information.
