The Airbus-developed firefighting kit for the A400M Atlas has entered operational service for the first time as France battles a series of wildfires that have swept across parts of the country in recent days.
An A400M operated by the French Air and Space Force has joined firefighting efforts near Bordeaux, marking the first real-world deployment of the roll-on/roll-off system after more than two years of development and flight testing.

The aircraft carries a removable tank inside its cargo hold capable of releasing up to 20 tonnes of water or fire retardant in a single drop, roughly equivalent to the payload of three Canadair water bombers. Because the system does not require structural modifications, the A400M can quickly return to its military transport role once the kit is removed.
The French Air and Space Force formally unveiled the capability on July 24, describing it as a complement to the country's specialized firefighting fleet rather than a replacement for dedicated aircraft such as the Canadair and Dash. The military said the A400M would be used to lay retardant lines ahead of advancing flames, helping contain the spread of large wildfires.

The deployment comes as southern France faces one of its most severe wildfire seasons in years. Fires have also spread across neighboring Spain, forcing hundreds of thousands of residents to evacuate and stretching aerial firefighting resources.
Development of the A400M firefighting kit began in 2024 through a partnership involving Airbus Defence and Space, the French Air and Space Force's Military Air Expertise Center (CEAM) and France's Civil Security Directorate. Earlier this month, French authorities announced that the system would be evaluated during the current fire season, paving the way for its first operational use.

Airbus has been testing the firefighting kit for the A400M over the past two years while looking for additional missions for the transport aircraft. Most A400M orders have come from the European nations that jointly funded the program, and Airbus has been promoting new applications to attract further customers and extend production beyond existing commitments.
