Lufthansa expects Lufthansa City Airlines to receive only one Airbus A220-300 in 2026, according to details disclosed in the group’s 2025 financial results released on Friday.
The aircraft type was ordered in 2023, when Lufthansa placed a firm order for 40 A220-300 jets for the new subsidiary. The A220 is intended to complement the airline’s Airbus A320 family fleet on European routes feeding Lufthansa’s hubs.
City Airlines was created as part of Lufthansa’s restructuring of its continental operations and is gradually assuming the feeder role previously performed by Lufthansa CityLine. The airline initially operated from Munich and began flights from Frankfurt in February 2026.
By the end of 2025, Lufthansa City Airlines operated 15 aircraft from Munich, consisting of 11 Airbus A320neo and four A319 jets. Lufthansa said the fleet is expected to grow to 25 aircraft by the end of 2026, including 20 A320neo, four A319 and one A220-300.
The limited number of A220 deliveries follows recent adjustments by Airbus to production targets for the A220 program.
Once deliveries accelerate, the A220-300 is expected to operate European routes with lower passenger demand while maintaining connections to Lufthansa’s long-haul flights through Frankfurt and Munich.
