A LATAM Airlines Airbus A320 left the runway while landing at Cascavel Airport in southern Brazil on Monday, August 31, coming to a stop on soft ground beside the paved surface.

The aircraft was operating flight LA3858 from São Paulo Guarulhos International Airport to Cascavel, a city in the inland portion of Paraná state, about 440 mi (710 km) west of the state capital Curitiba.

LATAM said the aircraft was carrying 145 passengers and six crew members. All 151 occupants disembarked safely and no injuries were reported.

Flightradar24 tracking data indicates that the aircraft involved was PR-MYO, an Airbus A320-214. Playback of the flight shows the aircraft arriving at Cascavel at around 9:47 a.m. local time and its ground track ending outside the runway.

Images taken after the incident show the A320 immobilized on wet ground alongside the paved area, with its landing gear partially sunk into the terrain. There was no immediate information about possible damage to the aircraft.

Rain was falling at Cascavel at the time of the landing, and video recorded at the airport shows a considerable amount of water being displaced by the A320's tires as it traveled along the runway. There is no evidence at this stage, however, establishing the weather or runway conditions as the cause of the excursion.

Local media quoted passengers as saying that the aircraft had made an additional circuit before landing. One passenger interviewed by local broadcaster CATVE said the crew later referred to slippery runway conditions.

The cause of the runway excursion has not been determined. Initial Brazilian media reports have frequently described the aircraft as having "skidded," but there is no technical information yet establishing whether aquaplaning or another factor contributed to the event.

The incident also affected operations at Cascavel. LATAM confirmed the cancellation of flight LA3859, which was scheduled to operate from Cascavel to São Paulo Guarulhos following the arrival of LA3858.
