The US Air Force (USAF) has formally received its new VC-25B Bridge aircraft, a modified Boeing 747-8i previously operated by the government of Qatar, marking the beginning of commissioning flights before it enters presidential service.

The aircraft arrived at Joint Base Andrews on June 19 and will undergo a series of validation flights designed to verify mission systems, communications and operational procedures before becoming available for presidential transport missions.

The 747-8i is intended to serve as an interim "Air Force One bridge" aircraft while Boeing continues work on the long-delayed VC-25B program, which will eventually replace the current VC-25A fleet. The two purpose-built VC-25B aircraft, based on the Boeing 747-8, are now expected to enter service around 2028 after years of schedule delays and billions of dollars in cost overruns.

Its arrival comes just days after the apparent final presidential trip aboard one of the VC-25A aircraft, the pair of Boeing 747-200B jets that have served US presidents since the early 1990s. Those aircraft replaced the older VC-137 fleet, military variants of the Boeing 707 that had carried presidents since the Kennedy administration.

Unlike the future VC-25B fleet, the outgoing VC-25As were built specifically for the presidential mission and retain capabilities such as aerial refueling, a feature that is not expected to be included on the replacement aircraft.

Air Force officials said the Bridge aircraft received secure communications equipment, defensive systems and other modifications required for presidential transport, although the program deliberately avoided some of the more extensive changes planned for the permanent VC-25B fleet in order to accelerate delivery.

The aircraft also retains much of its original interior layout from its previous role transporting members of the Qatari royal family. According to the Air Force, preserving much of the existing cabin configuration helped shorten the modification timeline while maintaining required security and communications standards.

To support the accelerated introduction of the aircraft, the Air Force leased an Atlas Air 747-8 freighter to begin pilot and maintainer training and later acquired a former Lufthansa 747-8i as a dedicated training platform. A full-scale interior mock-up was also delivered earlier this year to familiarize crews with the new aircraft.

President Donald Trump visited the aircraft at Joint Base Andrews on Friday and said it would participate in Independence Day celebrations in Washington. The aircraft now carries a red, white, dark blue and gold color scheme selected by Trump, replacing the traditional light blue presidential livery introduced during the Kennedy era.

The interim aircraft was acquired after Qatar offered the 747-8i to the United States. While the Air Force has not disclosed the total cost of modifications, lawmakers have questioned the expense and scope of the conversion effort, while critics have raised concerns about the unusual arrangement involving a foreign-owned aircraft.

Once commissioning flights are completed, the VC-25B Bridge will join the existing VC-25A and C-32 fleets as part of the presidential airlift force, providing additional capacity until Boeing delivers the next-generation VC-25B aircraft.
