ANA Holdings has signed a firm agreement for eight additional Embraer E190-E2s, increasing its order to 23 aircraft almost two years before the first example is scheduled to join the Japanese airline group.
The contract announced on September 4 formalizes a decision approved by ANA's board on July 29. The group initially ordered 15 E190-E2s in 2025 and retains options for another five aircraft.
ANA said in July that the eight additional aircraft represented an investment of approximately ¥105 billion (US$642 million), with deliveries planned between fiscal years 2029 and 2032. The first aircraft from the original order is scheduled for delivery in 2028.
The decision means ANA has increased its firm commitment by more than 50% before gaining operational experience with the E2.

ANA plans to use the E190-E2 on domestic routes as it restructures its regional fleet. The aircraft will also mark the introduction of Embraer's second-generation E-Jet family in Japan, although first-generation E-Jets have operated in the country since 2009.
The Japanese group originally selected up to 20 E190-E2s in February 2025, comprising 15 firm orders and five options. The initial firm contract was signed with Embraer during the Paris Air Show in June 2025.
From SpaceJet to E2
The E190-E2 has effectively taken the position once expected to be occupied by Mitsubishi's SpaceJet in ANA's future regional fleet.
ANA was the launch customer for the Japanese aircraft,ordering 15 Mitsubishi Regional Jets, as the program was originally known, in 2010, with options for another ten. The airline was initially expected to receive the first aircraft in 2014.
Repeated development delays prevented that from happening. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries suspended SpaceJet development in 2020 and formally terminated the program in 2023 without delivering an aircraft to ANA or any other airline.

Embraer is already well established in Japan with the first-generation E-Jets. The JAL Group currently operates 18 E170s and 14 E190s, while Fuji Dream Airlines has an all-Embraer fleet of two E170s and 13 E175s. FDA also ordered two additional E175s in July, for delivery in 2027 and 2028.
The eight-aircraft agreement announced on Friday takes ANA's firm E190-E2 commitment to 23 aircraft. Exercising its remaining five options would increase the fleet to 28.
