ANA Holdings, the parent company of All Nippon Airways (ANA), has ordered eight additional Embraer E190-E2 regional jets, expanding its commitment to the Brazilian aircraft to 23 firm orders.

The new order, approved by ANA's board of directors on July 29, is valued at approximately US$642 million (¥105 billion). Deliveries are scheduled between fiscal years 2029 and 2032. ANA first selected the E190-E2 in 2025, placing an order for 15 aircraft plus five purchase options.

The additional aircraft will be operated by regional partner IBEX Airlines under an ACMI agreement. ANA will remain responsible for route planning, scheduling and ticket sales, while IBEX will operate the flights.

The two airlines also plan to expand their existing codeshare partnership into a more comprehensive commercial agreement beginning in 2029, subject to regulatory approval.

IBEX currently operates a fleet of nine CRJ700 regional jets, which will eventually be replaced by the E190-E2.

The airline was the launch customer for Mitsubishi Aircraft's SpaceJet program, originally known as the MRJ, which aimed to compete directly with Embraer's E-Jets.

Replacing the failed SpaceJet program

ANA selected the E190-E2 after the collapse of Mitsubishi Aircraft's SpaceJet program, for which it had been the launch customer. The Japanese manufacturer spent years trying to certify the regional jet before Mitsubishi Heavy Industries cancelled the project in 2023 following repeated delays, redesigns and billions of dollars in development costs.

The SpaceJet M90 was intended to compete directly with the Embraer E190-E2 in the regional jet market. Both aircraft were designed around Pratt & Whitney's geared turbofan engine family, with the Japanese jet using the PW1200G and the E190-E2 powered by the PW1900G.

At the time of publication, Embraer had not commented on ANA's announcement.
