An Italian Army CH-47F Chinook crashed in Bosnia and Herzegovina on Thursday, October 29, killing at least four people and injuring 11 others during an operation in support of the European Union Force (EUFOR) Althea mission.

The helicopter went down in the Gorice area, near Brčko in northeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina. All 15 people aboard were Italian, according to local authorities. Initial reports indicated three fatalities, but a fourth person later died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Footage circulating online shows the Chinook rotating while descending rapidly before disappearing behind trees. The cause of the accident remains unknown.

The Italian Ministry of Defense confirmed that one of its helicopters had crashed while operating as part of EUFOR Althea and said the circumstances were being investigated. EUFOR also confirmed fatalities and serious injuries but had not released a detailed casualty count.

No civilians were injured and no civilian property or infrastructure was damaged, according to EUFOR.

The aviation detachment supports EUFOR operations with missions including troop and cargo transport, reconnaissance, support for ground forces and training activities.

The ICH-47F is the Italian Army version of Boeing's tandem-rotor CH-47F. The aircraft involved in Thursday's accident was destroyed, according to the Aviation Safety Network, which has not listed its registration or manufacturer serial number.

EUFOR said a full investigation into the accident would be conducted.
