Heart Aerospace has received authorization from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to begin flight testing of its X1 demonstrator, bringing the electric aircraft developer to the verge of the prototype's long-awaited maiden flight.
The FAA issued a Special Airworthiness Certificate in the Experimental Category after inspecting the aircraft, reviewing its technical documentation and evaluating the company's proposed flight-test program at Plattsburgh International Airport in upstate New York.

The approval allows Heart to immediately begin the X1 flight test campaign, which follows more than a year of coordination with the FAA and an extensive series of ground tests covering the aircraft's structure, propulsion system, onboard systems and low- and high-speed taxi trials.
The X1 is a full-scale demonstrator for the ES-30, Heart's planned 30-seat hybrid-electric regional airliner. The company says the aircraft will be used to validate flight characteristics, evaluate key technologies and collect data to support development of the production model.
With a wingspan of 106 ft (32.3 m), a length of 76 ft (23.2 m) and a maximum takeoff weight exceeding 25,000 lb (11,340 kg), the X1 is expected to become the largest electric aircraft to fly once the test program begins.
The milestone comes after repeated schedule changes. Heart originally targeted the demonstrator's first flight for 2025 before postponing it to early 2026. At the time, the company had already transferred the aircraft from Sweden to Plattsburgh after replacing a wing component following problems involving composite materials.
The prototype was built while Heart Aerospace was still based in Gothenburg, Sweden. In 2025, the startup closed its Swedish operations and relocated its headquarters to Los Angeles, arguing that the move would place it closer to investors, aerospace suppliers and a larger aviation ecosystem needed to accelerate development of its aircraft programs.
The ES-30 is a hybrid-electric regional aircraft designed to carry up to 30 passengers on short-haul routes. Heart says it has accumulated orders and commitments from airlines including United Airlines and Air Canada as it works toward certification of the aircraft.
