Air TransportThe shortened, high-altitude variant of China’s C919 narrowbody, designated C919-600, has been photographed at COMAC’s facilities in Shanghai, offering the first clear indication that the aircraft is moving toward flight-test activities. The jet was not formally unveiled and appeared in an outdoor area typically used for ground preparation ahead of initial flights.
The Chinese planemaker had outlined plans for both a shortened and a stretched C919 variant during the Shanghai International Commercial Airshow, held in November 2023.
The C919-600 is understood to be optimized for operations at high-elevation airports and in thin-air conditions, a requirement common on routes in western China. To achieve this, the aircraft features a shortened fuselage compared with the baseline C919, a change intended to improve takeoff performance and climb capability in plateau environments.

Tibet Airlines has previously been identified as the launch customer for the high-altitude variant, with an order reportedly covering 40 aircraft. The model is expected to support operations to and from airports on the Tibetan Plateau, where performance margins are more restrictive for standard narrowbody jets.
The appearance of the C919-600 suggests an expansion of the C919 family, which is expected to include multiple fuselage lengths. In addition to the high-altitude version, COMAC is also working on the standard C919-700 and a stretched C919-800.
While official specifications have not been released, image-based comparisons with the production C919 indicate the C919-600 could be approximately 34 meters long, compared with an estimated 45 meters for the stretched variant.
These dimensions place the aircraft close to the size range of the Airbus A320neo family, which has served as a reference point for COMAC’s narrowbody program.
