Airbus could deliver A400M military transport aircraft to Poland before the end of the decade if Warsaw makes a procurement decision soon, according to the manufacturer's top executive in Europe.
Airbus Europe President Johan Pelissier told Polish news outlet RMF24 that production capacity would allow deliveries before 2030. Poland has been evaluating the A400M as it seeks to expand its airlift capability beyond its existing C-130 Hercules and C-295 fleets.
The potential acquisition is not new. Polish Deputy Defense Minister Paweł Zalewski confirmed in August that the government was negotiating a possible A400M purchase, with financing potentially available through the European Union's Security Action for Europe (SAFE) program.
Unofficial estimates have previously suggested a fleet of between eight and 15 aircraft. Polish Air Force officials have separately indicated a requirement for around 10 heavy transport aircraft.

Airbus' latest statement adds a potential timeframe to those discussions, suggesting that Poland could begin receiving the aircraft before 2030 rather than waiting until the following decade.

Multinational A400M initiative
Poland also joined a NATO initiative in July aimed at expanding cooperation around the A400M. Belgium, Croatia, France, Germany, Spain, Turkey and the United Kingdom are also involved.
The initiative is designed to explore different levels of cooperation, including joint procurement, shared aircraft, training, maintenance and infrastructure. Poland and Croatia are the only participating countries that do not currently operate the A400M.
Participation does not prevent Poland from acquiring its own fleet. A national purchase could operate alongside multinational arrangements intended to improve aircraft availability and reduce support and training costs.
Warsaw has already held discussions with Spain and Airbus over both transport and aerial refueling capabilities. Polish officials visited Airbus facilities in Getafe in June, including the A400M maintenance center and the A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) conversion line.

Separate requirement for medium transports
An A400M acquisition would address Poland's heavy airlift requirement and is separate from its search for a new medium transport aircraft.
The Polish Air Force is also evaluating replacements for its older C-130 Hercules fleet, with the Embraer C-390 Millennium and Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules among the aircraft associated with that requirement.
The A400M occupies a larger category, with a maximum payload of 37 metric tons (81,600 lb) and the ability to transport oversized military equipment that cannot fit inside smaller tactical transports.
Poland is simultaneously pursuing an aerial refueling capability. The country is expected to acquire four Airbus A330 MRTTs through a cooperative European procurement, giving the Polish Air Force a dedicated tanker capability as its fleet expands to include the Lockheed Martin F-35A.
