Air Algérie has ordered 10 Boeing 737-8 aircraft, according to a company statement cited by Algeria’s state news agency APS.

The purchase is tied to a government plan led by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to develop the country’s civil aviation sector and expand air connectivity.

Five aircraft are scheduled for delivery from July 2026, with the remaining five to follow in 2027. The airline did not disclose the value of the order.

The 737-8 will be used on short- and medium-haul routes, replacing older aircraft and adding capacity on existing services.

The order is part of a fleet renewal program that also includes 10 Airbus A330-900neo widebody jets, of which three have already been delivered, and eight Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft expected from 2027.

Air Algérie has also ordered 16 ATR 72 turboprops for domestic operations, aimed at serving smaller cities within the country.

The airline plans to carry 9.8 million passengers in 2026, compared with 8.8 million in 2025, as it increases frequencies and adds destinations.

Airlines in Africa have been expanding fleets in response to rising demand, although the sector still faces constraints such as high costs and limited airport infrastructure in several markets.
